Black Jersey Giants

US$6.50

The Black Jersey Giant is the largest purebred chicken breed in the world, developed in New Jersey in the late 19th century as a heritage alternative to the turkey.

  • Appearance: Striking all-black plumage with a brilliant iridescent beetle-green sheen in sunlight. Features a single red comb, dark black-to-willow legs, and characteristic yellow soles on the undersides of their feet.

  • Size & Weight: Massive, heavy-framed build. Roosters weigh 13 to 15 lbs, while hens reach 10 to 11 lbs.

  • Egg Production: Good layers relative to their size, producing roughly 150 to 200 extra-large brown eggs per year.

  • Growth Rate: Slow-maturing breed, taking up to 8 to 9 months to reach full frame size and body weight.

  • Temperament: Gentle giants—exceptionally calm, docile, and friendly, making them easy to manage and suitable for mixed backyard flocks.

  • Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy due to their body mass, though their large combs require frostbite protection in severe winters.
