Gran Nain Banana Trees (started)
The Grand Nain banana is a popular commercial variety known for its sweet, firm-fleshed fruit and relatively compact size, often called "Great Dwarf" (despite its common "tree" name, it's actually an herbaceous perennial).
Description:
- Size: Typically grows 6-10 feet tall, with a width of 5-10 feet.
- Foliage: Lush, broad, solid green leaves, providing a tropical aesthetic.
- Fruit: Produces large bunches (hands) of medium-sized, sweet bananas, usually ripening to a classic yellow. A single bunch can contain 80-100 bananas and weigh 40-60 lbs.
- Growth Rate: Fast-growing, capable of fruiting in as little as 9-12 months under ideal conditions.
- Resilience: Known for good wind resistance, heat tolerance, and some cold tolerance.
Growing Instructions (Short):
-
Sunlight: Full sun (6-8 hours daily) is ideal for optimal growth and fruit production, though partial sun is tolerated.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures ( or ). Protect from frost (below or ).
-
Soil: Requires well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with plenty of organic matter, preferably slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-7.0). Avoid waterlogged conditions.
-
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water deeply 2-3 times per week during the growing season, and more often in hot, dry weather.
-
Fertilizing: Heavy feeders. Fertilize regularly (every 2-4 weeks during the growing season) with a balanced fertilizer, preferably one with higher potassium for fruiting.
-
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves. After a stalk produces fruit, cut it back to ground level; new shoots (pups) will emerge. Leave 1-2 strong pups to replace the parent plant.
-
Pots: Excellent for container growing in large pots (15-25 gallons) with good drainage, allowing them to be moved indoors in colder climates.
