Description:

  • Size: Medium to large deciduous tree, typically reaching 40-70 feet tall with a spread of 30-40 feet.
  • Leaves: Alternate, simple, 1-3 inches long with a serrated margin. They are bright green in spring and summer, turning yellow in fall.
  • Bark: The most distinctive feature, exfoliating in thin, papery layers that reveal a smooth, cinnamon-brown inner bark.
  • Flowers: Inconspicuous catkins that appear in spring.
  • Fruits: Small, winged seeds that mature in late spring or early summer.

Planting:

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, acidic soils, especially those found near rivers, streams, and swamps. It can tolerate occasional flooding.
  • Spacing: Plant trees at least 30 feet apart to accommodate their mature size.

Growing:

  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, adding 2-3 feet per year.
  • Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is tolerant of wet soils.
  • Fertilization: Generally not required, but can benefit from a slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
  • Pruning: Prune young trees to develop a strong central leader and remove any crossing or weak branches.

Uses:

  • Ornamental Tree: Highly valued for its attractive exfoliating bark, which provides year-round interest. It is often used as a specimen tree or in groups.
  • Erosion Control: The extensive root system helps to stabilize soil along riverbanks and streams.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Provides food and shelter for various wildlife species, including birds and small mammals.

Cautions:

  • Soil Moisture: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during dry periods.
  • Short Lifespan: Generally has a shorter lifespan than other birch species, typically 50-75 years.
  • Susceptibility to Disease: Can be susceptible to bronze birch borer and other diseases.
  • Messy: The exfoliating bark and falling leaves can create a messy appearance.

By carefully considering these factors, you can successfully plant and care for a River Birch tree and enjoy its unique beauty and benefits.
